History of Perdido Key, Florida
Located along the stunning Gulf Coast of Northwest Florida, Perdido Key is known for its sugar-white sand beaches, emerald waters, and laid-back coastal charm. The name “Perdido” comes from the Spanish word meaning “lost,” inspired by early Spanish explorers who reportedly had difficulty locating the entrance to nearby Perdido Bay.
For centuries, the area remained largely untouched, preserved by natural dunes, maritime forests, and coastal wetlands that supported diverse wildlife and native vegetation. Native American tribes lived throughout the Gulf Coast region long before European explorers arrived, relying on the abundant waterways and natural resources for survival.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish and French explorers navigated the Gulf Coast, using the bays and waterways around Perdido Key for trade, fishing, and transportation. The region later became important for shipping, fishing, and military activity due to its strategic location near Pensacola and the Alabama state line.
